They dish it out, but can they take it??
By sydney@alias | July 15, 2008
They’re all up in arms again…about so-called dirty politics on the part of conservatives. Let’s see… third parties publish the voting record of limp-wristed Republicans and left wing Democrats, then Matt and company freak out. I’m starting to notice a pattern here. The interesting thing is that negative campaigning from third parties isn’t unique to the right. In fact, in elections past, left wing groups connected with the Democrat party (like the abortion lobby, lawyers, gay groups, etc) have poured money into states like Montana hoping to influence the elections. They use the money not for sunshine and lolly pops but for negative campaigning. Why? Because it works. People not only want to know what they’re voting for but also what they’re voting against.
I realize that random, obscure, online bloggers have no passion for facts and that their zombies don’t care… but the reason Koopman is never firmly linked to those PACs is because no one has been able to show a connection.
The facts are that groups on all sides of the political spectrum take part in dirty politicking… and will continue to do so. It’d be nice if the left could take what they dish out.

Randomness from a Republican Mind
By sydney@alias | June 26, 2008
I’m rather late reporting on the excitement that was the 2008 Montana Republican State Convention… I had heard most of the candidates speak at one time or another so the highlight had to have been seeing Ron Paul in action. I had to keep alternating between a thumbs up and a crazy sign near my temple. I have problems with his foreign policy, but much of what he says is completely true if unattainable. That dinner was packed, and I spotted Koopman in attendance, though he seemed to avoid the rest of the convention. Hmmm… Any thoughts as to why?
Now for today’s decision to uphold our God given right to own a firearm. It’s a sad sign of our times that the decision was so close. A law abiding citizen even in Montana has to jump through hoops to buy a handgun, and we have relatively liberal gun laws here. To those who don’t believe in an individual right to bear arms, I only have one question- how do you plan on retaining all your other precious rights once you are disarmed? Hitler also believed in gun control.

Not so common courtesy
By sydney@alias | June 16, 2008
Have you noticed a decided lack of politeness, civility and courtesy in today’s society? Hmm… Before I continue, perhaps I should define terms? Politeness where being polite equals turning your phone off while in a movie theater… or civility when being civil equals being patient with those around you… or courtesy when being courteous equals yielding to hikers when you’re on a fast moving bicycle… are we on the same page now? Even decorum seems lacking when dressing up means a mini skirt, stilettos and a lingerie top.
I realize we live in the last frontier: a place with plenty of rolling hills, mountain tops and pricey subdivided meadows to spread out in and fulfill one’s dreams… Even so, there are thousands of people living, working and shopping in this county. It calls for some rules of engagement.
1. Thou shalt not text during the feature presentation.
2. Thou shalt not ride thy bike on a mountain road unless thou hast a death wish.
3. Thou shalt cross only in the cross walks.
4. Thou shalt pick up after your dog. Or child. Or yourself. Whichever is most applicable.
5. Thou shalt wear appropriate clothing.
6. Thou shalt bathe. Regularly. Or stay home.
7. Thou shalt give thy child a name that can be spelled and pronounced.
8. Thou shalt not park irregularly. If at first you don’t succeed, try, try again.
9. Thou shalt control thy offspring in public. Don’t make other diners sit through Junior’s temper tantrum.
10. Thou shalt put away thy cell phone long enough to be checked out. Remember- clerks are people too.
If I were a liberal, I’d need approximately a gazillion pages of minutia to cover the extent of society’s degradation, but I’m neither that bored nor that stupid, so I hope you can read between the lines. Feel free to add your own pet peeves… for once we can all be girls and vent on the inanity of living with a bunch of Californian immigrants. In the meantime, excuse me while I wipe the dog shit off my shoes.

Vote Conservative = Vote Republican?
By Diamond in the West | June 16, 2008
Lucky for us, Republicans, we have options!
Montanans remain baffled at the Republican nominee for US Senate…but, all is not lost!
Bob Kelleher himself has openly and publicly stated that party name is irrelevant. He has run 16 times for elected office, mostly as a Democrat, but also as a Green Party candidate, an Independent, and of course most recently as a Republican. So this November, we should all heed his advice and vote for real conservatives, not for the (R) behind the name.
Two Republican primary candidates have retaliated against the results thus far. Patty Lovaas and Mike Lange are still seeking to run against Max Baucus, but are taking different avenues.
Lovaas, the first of the two to openly decide to continue in the race faces an uphill, if not impossible battle as she attempts to overturn state law and enter the race as an Independent. The deadline for getting on the ballot has come and gone and even if the deadline were still attainable, Montana state law prohibits anyone from running as a party candidate and an independent candidate within the same year. However, Lovaas still strives for the 9,600 signatures required and says that if she can get them, she will confront head on the laws that prevent her from being placed on the ballot.
The chances of Lovaas getting on the ballot are slim to none which is probably a good thing. She came in fourth place in the six-way primary with only 10% of the vote. In addition, her efforts are not supported by the Montana Republican Party. A weak speaker and political rookie, she’d be crushed by the Baucus machine, but should be admired for her efforts in offering a more conservative choice than has previously been selected in Kelleher.
Meanwhile, Mike Lange plans to continue his campaign as usual. One exception: candidate outreach. He has already recruited the help of fifth-place primary candidate Anton Pearson in his “team campaign” efforts. He wants to enlist bronze medalist Kirk Bushman as well. Lange wants to make the unusual process of running as a write-in as easy as possible by having labels printed for voters so that they don’t have to write in his name.
Its a tough run for all involved, but Lange is quite the optimist when he says that he doesn’t want Republicans to be discouraged or to think that this race is not winnable. Hopefully, his efforts will be successful. Kelleher is not a good option for our state. He does not consider himself a Republican and he does not have the active support of the Republican party. He supports socialized medicine and pulling out of Iraq, but to his credit, is pro-life. He is a parliamentarian, a viewpoint foreign to both Republicans and Democrats. His fifteen defeated campaigns do not yield for us a voting record to point to, but he comes off as rather bizarre. Opinions issued by several political scientists and also by Erik Iverson, head of the Republican Party have denounced Kelleher as a conservative.
I must admit, I tend to tow the party line, but I absolutely cannot bring myself to support Kelleher. I wish the best for the true conservatives courageous enough to stay in the race.
What say You?

Brown has it right on energy
By Diamond in the West | June 13, 2008
Gubernatorial candidate Roy Brown should be applauded for coming out against Governor Schweitzer recently in the Billings Gazette. Governor Scheisty allowed for four oil & gas leases to pulled from an auction, causing Montanans to go another day not being able to afford gas.
“If he were governor, Brown said, ‘there would never be a delay in responsibly developing new sources of energy - not while Montanans are paying $4 a gallon at the pump…”
Clearly Schweitzer’s connections in the radical environmentalist movement are more important than easing the financial burden of energy and transportation costs. John Sinrud was also quoted in the story, explaining his new political advocacy group and exposing the truth about Schweitzer’s ties to the radical environmentalists.
Brown pledges to never delay progress in the field of energy the way our current governor has. He also pledges to make sure that all governmental departments are on the same page when it comes to energy development. Imagine the humiliation being experienced by the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation right now! They have a huge deal coming down the pipe (literally) and because one department “raises concerns,” the governor buckles like he’s giving Rosie O’Donnell a piggy-back. The inefficiencies under Schweitzer’s administration are endless.
Like Brown, I agree with energy conservation and alternative sources of fuel, but also like Brown, I agree that we need to produce what we know best first, so as to lower prices as quickly as possible. As an avid nature-lover of course I don’t want drilling just anywhere, and definitely not everywhere, but it was Schweitzer’s own spokesperson, Harper Lawson who admitted that the four leases combined would have only affected 800 acres of Montana’s 90 million.
As for what many liberals are saying about prices staying the same despite drilling on the Rocky Mountain Front, they are right…because they’re talking about the world market for oil. Drilling in Montana will not even make a dent in world oil prices, but if we drill in Montana, refine in Montana, and serve Montana first, you’re talking about a hailstorm on energy prices. Which is why I can only fully support a candidate who not only pledges to expand Montana’s energy industry, but who also pledges to serve Montanans first. A MAKE IT HERE, KEEP IT HERE policy is what’s best for Montana right now.

It’s like Christmas for Liberals!

Blame Someone Else Day
When : The first Friday the 13th of the year
What a great time you can have on this day. Imagine all the problems, errors, and mistakes you could heap on someone else today. On this day you don’t have to take responsibility or blame for any faux pax on your part. On the downside, this day comes as a double edged sword. While you are busy putting the blame elsewhere, someone might just be putting the blame on you!

GIT-R-DONE!! Blame George W. Bush! Blame Big Oil! Blame the Rich! Blame Conservatives! Blame Guns! Blame Evil Corporations! Blame FOX News! Blame The Government!
Do not…I repeat, DO NOT accept ANY responsibility for YOUR position in life. Remember, it’s ALWAYS somebody else’s fault!

What’s good enough for the goose…er… Nevermind.
By sydney@alias | June 11, 2008
For the past year, there have been ever louder rumblings in the Democrat camp on socializing… er… taking over industries like health care and oil. Maxine Waters made headlines with the following:
“And guess what this liberal would be all about? This liberal would be all about socializing — er, uh. [Pauses for several moments] …. would be about … basically … taking over, and the government running all of your companies”
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUaY3LhJ-IQ
The Democrats claim to have the interests of the American people in mind when they advocate Big Government subsidizing, regulating and taxing an ever greater portion of the people’s wealth. Do they? And regardless of the motivation, is it an improvement over the existing system?
One example of the inability of the Feds to run anything complicated (out of many to choose from) concerns the Senate food service. For many years now the Senate food service has been a venture paid for by the American people through taxes but run by the Federal Government. Surprisingly, after $18 million lost in the last 15 years and an additional $2 million loss in this year alone, the democrats claim to see the light. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, chairman of the Rules and Administrations Committee which oversees the operation of the Senate, proposed privatization explaining:
“Candidly, I don’t think the taxpayers should be subsidizing something that doesn’t need to be. There are parts of government that can be run like a business and should be run like businesses. … financially breaking even has not been the objective of the current management due to an expectation that the restaurants will operate at a deficit annually.”
While it’s frightening that the Feds can’t even run a cafeteria, it shouldn’t come as a shock to anyone. Remember, these are the folks that want to run your health care. So why are they so eager to privatize their cafeteria but nationalize industries for the rest of us? Could it be that the mediocrity of socialism is reserved for the “little people” while those in charge get the best that capitalism has to offer? Sen. Feinstein whined about “noticeably sub-par” food and service… Is this the quality we should expect at the doctor’s office or while pumping gas when Democrats and liberals everywhere have their way?
Republicans are not the only ones who see the hypocrisy of the situation. Sen. Robert Menendez (D), said:
“you cannot stand on the Senate floor and condemn the privatization of workers, and then turn around and privatize the workers here in the Senate…”
Finally, I agree with a Democrat…kind of.
One final note on the subject. A woman calling into the Sean Hannity show asked, “Are the members of congress going to have the same health care coverage as the rest of us?” Good question. After “Senatorial Foodgate,” I’m thinking that what’s good enough for the American people isn’t good enough for their public servants, especially of the Democrat variety.
